Why
Training is an important part of PYV's ministry for three reasons:
Firstly, if we are going to carry out an effective ministry, we need leaders who know what they are doing. Training has a direct impact on the quality and safety of PYV camps and events.
Secondly, many of the leaders on PYV camps and activities are also involved in youth ministry in their home churches. By providing training for these leaders, we are also working to improve the quality and safety of youth ministry in churches around the state.
Thirdly, we realise that in the future, many of the leaders of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria will have got their first taste of leadership through PYV camps. Thus, PYV can help in the process of laying firm foundations for the future by teaching and modelling biblical patterns of leadership.
How
When Jesus taught his disciples to be apostles, he did not just teach them how to run ministry events or how to exegete a passage. Jesus' training regime put all aspects of the human person to work: heart, head and hands.
Training for the head: PYV offers three avenues of training which help young leaders to learn more of God's word, and to learn how to apply it to youth ministry: FUELLED training days, Foundations and Train24
Training for the heart: Every leader on a PYV camp is given a leaders chaplain, who can encourage, pray for, and debrief with their assigned leader. 21C is a national initiative of the Presbyterian church, intended to grow leaders with godly character. Also, the PYV short term mission trip in 2008 is intended to challenge young leaders to become passionate about cross-cultural minstries.
Training for the hands: The best way of learning to do ministry, is by practise - and camps are a great opportunity to experience many kinds of minstry: leading bible studies, activity groups, music, multimedia administration and more. Apply here if you are interested in being involved in PYV camp leadeship. FUELLED days are also designed to have a significant practical component.
