General Information:
What is it?
The Intensive Stream is part of a training scheme called "Foundations," offered by PYV, in partnership with the PTC. Intended to resource Christians to live and teach the bible in a local church, this is the second of six units to be offered over the next few years. Other units that we plan to offer are: Christian Belief, Christian Leadership & Management, Lay Ministries, Christian Education, and New Testament. You can join (or leave) the course at any stage.
How "intensive" is it?
Come prepared to work hard and be challenged. There are three levels at which you can choose to do the subject:
- Audit - Just come, listen and enjoy, but without any assessment.
- PTC Credit - Complete two assessment pieces (an exam & a short essay), and have it credited as part of the Presbyterian Theological College's eight unit "Certificate in Bible and Ministry."
- ACT Credit - Complete the assessment as above, and to register with the Australian College of Theology to have the unit count toward the six unit "Associate in Theology" (ThA). Note: This will also give you automatic credit for the PTC award.
Who is it for?
It is open by application to any Christian aged 17-30. Application forms may be received by download from the summer camp FAQ page on www.pyv.org.au, or by sending this slip in with your camp form. Numbers are limited to 20 places, so don't delay. Call (03) 9017 4676 with queries, or email youthworker@pyv.org.au.
What are the extra costs?
If you wish to do the course for assessment it will cost $40, to audit costs $20. We will supply you with a letter which will help you apply to your board of management for assistance in meeting these costs.
About this year's course:
Old Testament will be taught by Prof Allan Harman - internationally recognised scholar and former principal of PTC Melbourne. The intensive stream will run for 2-3 hours on each day of camp, covering the following syllabus:
A brief survey of OT history and God's plan of salvation.
An overview of the various types of literature in the OT—history, poetry, prophecy.
A study of important theological themes in the OT such as covenant, kingship, the messiah.
An in-depth study of Deuteronomy.
All students will be sent Allan Harman's book Learning about the Old Testament, (Great Britain: Christian Focus, 2000) to read before camp. (112 pages).
It won't be all "nose to the grindstone": Intensive stream participants will still have time to join in many camp activities.
