West Camp Reflection 2012 - By Brad Haughey

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very natureGod, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Philippians 2:5-8

Being "Transformed By The Gospel" was the theme of PYV's first ever West Camp, held in the April school holidays.

West Camp brought together 62 youth from across Victoria (and some from NSW and SA) to Halls Gap for three days of challenging talks, fun activities, and encouraging fellowship.

With Jared Keath (final year candidate at PTC) speaking from Philippians, campers and leaders, were challenged on three main points:

  • How our lives should be driven by the Gospel
  • What we are doing now, and how the Cross redefines that
  • Examining those we look up to, and seeking role models who imitate Christ

As well as fantastic talks, campers were treated to a variety of team activities onsite (a banana relay in particular went down well - check out the pics on Facebook), and a scavenger hunt in Halls Gap. In free time, campers were also treated to a trip to the Pinnacle or ice-cream and window shopping in town. Our final dinner of camp had a safari theme, and was followed by a night of board games and chatting around the campfire.

Thanks goes to the team of PYV leaders who lead on camp, especially the Camp Executive of Toby McIntosh (Camp Convenor), Josie Millsteed (Assistant Convenor), Michael Enderby (Study Coordinator), Meg Craig (Sessions Coordinator), Joe Moody (Activities Coordinator) and Hui Lim (Pastoral Care Coordinator).

Many, many thanks also go to our cooks for the week, Leigh and Fiona Higgins from Inverleigh Presbyterian.

West Camp was the beginning of a new phase in PYV's camping ministry and it was such a joy to see so many youth and their local youth leaders come together to grow in their relationships with one another, and be an encouragement to others.

May God continue to bless you all as you live your life for Him.
